8 Smart Ways to Reduce Plastic Waste in Your Venue

In today’s fast-paced world, restaurants, cafés, and bars face a growing challenge: balancing customer convenience with environmental responsibility.

Take-away culture and delivery services have become the norm — and with them comes a mountain of single-use plastic waste. Coffee cups, food containers, plastic straws, cutlery… it all adds up fast.

As an industry professional, the time to act is now.

With new laws on single-use plastics and rising customer awareness, sustainable practices aren’t just a trend — they’re a business necessity.

Here are 8 practical ways to reduce or eliminate single-use plastic in your venue:

1. Say “NO” to Plastic Straws

Plastic straws are among the top polluters of beaches and oceans, often causing harm to marine and bird life.

Better options:

  • Reusable stainless steel straws
  • Durable paper straws
  • Even fresh lemongrass stems — a natural, aromatic option for drinks!

Why not bamboo?
Due to hygiene concerns and cleaning difficulty, we don’t recommend bamboo straws unless single-use and fully compostable.

2. Phase Out Single-Use Coffee Cups

Coffee-to-go is here to stay — but the cups don’t have to be disposable.

Offer reusable coffee mugs:

  • Sell branded mugs to regulars
  • Or rent them with a deposit/refund system

Bonus: It’s free advertising when your mug shows up on trains, offices, or Instagram. And it encourages customer loyalty.

3. Skip the Plastic Water Bottles

Switch to glass bottled water — a more elegant, sustainable, and profitable option.
Better yet, sell your own reusable branded water bottles and offer free or discounted refills.

Example: In Cambodia, the #RefillNotLandfill campaign encourages exactly this.

4. Ditch Plastic Takeaway Bags

Instead of plastic bags, offer branded cotton totes for take-away and delivery.

These reusable bags:

  • Are easy and cheap to source
  • Create long-term visibility for your brand
  • Can be resold or gifted for promotions

5. Go Eco with Takeout Packaging

Encourage regulars to bring their own reusable containers — explain the environmental reason, and most will gladly support the cause.

For everyone else:
Use paper-based or biodegradable boxes instead of plastic or Styrofoam.

6. Switch to Bamboo Cutlery

Stop handing out plastic forks and knives with every meal.

Replace them with bamboo cutlery sets — fully biodegradable and stylish. It shows you care.

7. Talk to Your Suppliers

Unnecessary plastic packaging often comes from the back door.

Let your suppliers know you prefer:

  • Loose produce
  • Recyclable or reusable packaging
  • Bulk deliveries when possible

Most will be happy to accommodate — and may even thank you for saving them packaging costs.

8. Ban the Plastic Sachets

Those tiny single-serving packs of ketchup, sugar, or mayo?
They create mountains of trash for just one meal.

Instead:

  • Provide full-size bottles at the table
  • Or offer refillable condiment stations

It’s cheaper, cleaner, and better for the environment.

It’s Time to Lead by Example

Reducing plastic doesn’t mean sacrificing quality or convenience — it means stepping into your role as a forward-thinking business.

As a venue owner or manager, you set the standard. You influence your guests. You make the call.

So make it count.
